Something very important just happened with chat GPT. And I don't think this is simply another new AI feature. Open AI introduced something called dots. And a dot is quite different from the chat GPT most of us have been using. Right now, when I use chat GPT, I ask it a question. It gives me an answer. Then I leave. But imagine having an AI assistant that keeps working after you leave. It can research something, work on a project, use applications you've connected to, and when your computer is turned off and you're doing something completely different, your dot can continue working. That's what Open AI announced at its development day on September 29th. So, today we're going to answer five questions. What exactly is dot? What can it do? How different is it from chat GPT? Where do you get one? And probably the question everyone wants to know is how much does it cost? I'm Ron Brown with Tech for Senior, where we help seniors understand technology and keep them updated on new AI programs coming out. So, let's have a look. What is Open AI's dot? The easiest way to understand dots is to think of the difference between an AI chatbot and an AI agent. Chat GPT traditionally has been something you talk to. You ask it, "What's the weather going to be tomorrow?" Or write an email for me. Or plan a vacation. Chat GPT answers the question and eventually interaction ends there. A dot is designed differently. OpenAI describes dots as always-on agents. Give your dot a goal or responsibility and it continue working on the job over time. And here's the really important part. Your dot actually gets its own computer in the cloud. That computer has its own browser. So, your dot doesn't necessarily need your computer sitting with Chrome open. Its computer is running on OpenAI's servers. That means your dot can continue working even when your own computer is turned off. Dots are powered by OpenAI's GPT-6 extra model, so we're no longer simply talking about asking AI questions. We're beginning to delegate jobs to AI. So, what can dot actually do? Let's make this practical. Suppose I was preparing an upcoming episode of Tech for Senior. Instead of asking Chat GPT, "What's happening in technology today?" I could give my dot an ongoing responsibility. I might say, "Keep an eye on important consumer technology developments. Pay particular attention to Windows, Android, Chromebooks, online scams, and artificial intelligence. Find stories that would be useful to seniors and bring the important ones to my attention." That's a very different relationship with AI. I'm not continually having to ask the question. The dot has the job. OpenAI says a dot can research information, analyze data, prepare documents, and even build software. It can also work across connected applications. So, for example, you're planning a vacation. You could potentially just have your dot researching hotels, keeping track of your itinerary, checking information you've stored, and helping organize the trip over several days. Or perhaps you're working on a large project. You can give dot the project, continue talking to it while it works, and adds additional instructions on the way. If it reaches a decision where it needs your judgment, it can come uh back and ask you. That's an important distinction. The idea isn't necessarily AI take over my life. It's more like, AI keep this project moving, and come back to me when you make a decision. The little bubble. That's also something unusual about how OpenAI presents dots. Your dot is represented by a little animated character, basically a colorful, bubbly avatar. You can even give your dot a name. Its default handle is used on your name, but you can personalize it during setup. Now, the animated character is cute. But don't let the little bubble fool you. Behind that friendly-looking character is a fairly sophisticated AI system running on its own cloud computer. So, I would think of bug bubble as simply the face of your AI assistant. The importance is the technology that's running behind it. Chat versus dot, what's the difference? Here's the easiest way to remember the difference. Chat GPT is primarily conversational. You ask it to do something, it responds. A dot can have ongoing responsibility. It can help you make progress between conversations. It can be proactive. That's the big word here. Proactive. Instead of waiting for you to remember to task, your dot can potentially recognize that something connected to its responsibility needs attention. So, you've gone from ask AI something to give AI something to look after. That's the substantial change in how we use these systems. And it's one of those reasons you're going to hear the word agent a lot more over the next year. All right, let's look at where we actually find these things called dots. Dots are part of Chat GPT. You don't need to completely separate the company and buy a dot. Open AI says you can create your dot by using the Chat GPT desktop application or the Chat GPT in a desktop web browser. So, on Windows or Mac, you can use Chat GPT to set it up. Once your dot has been created, Open AI is rolling out access through the Chat GPT mobile app. But, here's an important limitation at launch. You cannot create your dot on a phone, and mobile web isn't yet supported. So, if you're setting one up for the first time, start on your computer. And here's another important point. Dots are rolling out gradually. So, even if your ChatGPT subscription qualifies, you may not see the feature immediately. It could take several days before it appears in your account. All right, who gets these dots? And here's where we need to pay attention. Dots are not currently being rolled out to everyone using ChatGPT. For individual users, OpenAI says dots are rolling out to its pro plans. They are are also available for business premium customers. And there's an enterprise version being rolled out in beta, although an organization's administrator has to enable it. There's also an age restriction. You have to be 18 years or older, and there are geographic restrictions, as well. At launch, individual pro users in the EU, United Kingdom, and Switzerland don't have access. For viewers in Canada and the United States, eligible pro accounts are included in the rollout. So, if you're using a regular free version of ChatGPT or ChatGPT Plus, don't expect a dot suddenly to appear in your account right now. So, do dots cost money? Now, for the big question. Is dots free? Well, not really. OpenAI says your first dot is included with an eligible pro or business premium plan at no charge. So, there's not currently a separate monthly charge just to create your first dot. But, you need one of the qualifying subscriptions. And OpenAI now has multiple pro subscriptions. At the time I'm recording this, these include the $100, $200, and $500 a month pro tiers in the US. The new pro 500 plan was announced alongside these development updates and include OpenAI's highest usage allowance plus access to its Astra ultra-fast service for certain workloads. But, there's an important clarification. You do You do not need the $500 a month plan simply to get dot. Dot is available on eligible pro tiers. OpenAI says that for the first month after launch, dot usage won't count towards eligible user plan allowances. After the introductory period, OpenAI says it will provide more information about the usage terms. So, I wouldn't describe dot as free. A better description is your first dot is included with a qualifying paid ChatGPT subscription. Now, let's talk privacy and security. Now, there's one more issue I think we need to discuss. If AI assistant is going to work on your behalf, it may need access to information. You might connect Gmail. You might connect a calendar. You might connect cloud storage or other applications. And that means we need to be careful with our permissions. OpenAI says you control which applications your dot can access and what it's allowed to do. There are also approval requirements for certain actions. For example, your dot can't simply discover all your passwords. With supported website logins, it can pause and allow you to enter your credentials securely. OpenAI warns about something called prompt rejection. That's when a malicious webpage, email, or document contains hidden or misleading instructions designed to trick an AI agent. OpenAI has built protections against this, but it is specifically acknowledges that these protections do not eliminate the risk completely. So, my advice with any AI agent is simple. Start slowly and give it only permission it needs. And particularly when money, email, or important personal information is needed, keep yourself in the approval loop. So, what's the big picture? For the last few years, we've been talking about how to talk to artificial intelligence. Dots represent the next stage. Instead of simply asking AI questions, we're beginning to give it AI responsibilities. Your dot can now have its own computer. It can keep working while you're away. It can choose the useful applications that you want to connect to, and it can remember the context of an ongoing project. And it can come back to you when something needs your attention. Today, this is an expensive feature aimed primarily at pro and business users, but the technology is what I find fascinating because this gives us pretty good idea of where personal computing may be heading. And instead of some Instead of opening five different programs and figuring out how to accomplish something yourself, you may increasingly simply tell your AI assistant to do it. And I think that's something we're all going to have to decide. I'm Ron Brown with TechForSenior, and remember, technology doesn't have to be complicated, you just have to know what it's doing. Until we see you again, be sure and hit that like and subscribe, it really helps the channel, and have a great week. We'll see you soon.
