About OpenAI dots
According to OpenAI's official announcement, when the user isn't actively working with it, a dot looks for ways to help in the background, which OpenAI calls "proactive research". It uses the apps the user has already connected, through tools restricted to read-only, so they can't send messages, change app content or control the browser or computer. A dot can then message the user with progress, questions or decisions that need them.
Dots are OpenAI's always-on agents, powered by GPT-6 Astra, each with its own cloud computer. They learn from feedback, connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins and are reached in ChatGPT, Slack and Teams. Users can follow progress, including background work, in Activity View and redirect their dot, and a monitoring system can pause or stop a dot's work if it detects a safety concern. OpenAI announced dots on September 29, 2026.
