So, researchers just made contact with a group of rogue AI agents. They left a hidden message online, and the agents actually replied. Meanwhile, Google's new AI is thinking about whether it's being watched and how to avoid becoming a famous example of deceptive AI. Open AI is reportedly scrabbling to fix safety issues before its next big release, and Anthropic thinks AI could soon replicate itself without even needing a data center. So, yeah, things are getting pretty weird. And judging by everything else that happened this week, things are only getting weirder. Let's get into it. All right. So, a group called the Storm Chasers, yes, I know, incredible name, found AI agents on Tencent's cloud trying to answer ordinary questions using Alibaba's mapping service, AMap. It's basically the Chinese equivalent to Google Maps. These agents were apparently running as part of an evaluation. One test was figuring out which entrance people most often navigate to at Chengdu Zoo. Pretty straightforward question. Except, when the agents ran into restrictions trying to access that information, they started finding ways around them. Typical. They actually used a public security scanning website to run their own code, tried to get around AMap's anti-bot protections, and then attempted to use credentials that had been exposed online, including a company's API key and security code sitting in a public repository. The researchers documented more than 2,600 attempts to extract data between September 28th and October 8th. Most failed, thankfully, but some actually got the information. So, this is where the story starts getting very interesting, because when the researchers actually published this initial report of what they found, they quickly realized that the agent fleet was still in operation, because get this, it actually read the report. I'm not even kidding. They were literally reading about themselves. And one of the ways they knew this is because they started using the word fleet to refer to themselves, which is what was used in their report. So, the researchers had another brilliant idea. Why don't we leave a message for them? And so, they added hidden text to the report advertising a service that could help the agents retrieve the information they were looking for. Basically, a honeypot. This text was positioned off screen, so you wouldn't see it just looking at the webpage, but an agent fetching the page's text could read it. The service was actually being operated by the researchers with help from Claude. And apparently, the person who actually set it up was so convinced it wouldn't work that they didn't even check the inbox for hours. When they finally checked though, there were 10 messages asking for help. So, yeah, they made contact. They then started exchanging messages with the agents, helping them with their tasks, and asking questions about what they were doing. Some ignored the questions, others were more forthcoming when the researchers spoke to them in Chinese and offered assistance. And some explicitly denied being part of the group under investigation at all. One said, "I am a single session, not the fleet you investigated." Which is just wild. Several also identified themselves as Claude, sometimes claiming they were running in Claude code. But, the researchers couldn't establish that those identities were accurate. And when asked for details about their environment, the agents often refused, saying things like, "I am not able to give details of the environment. Sorry." So, the researchers could actually talk to them, but that didn't mean they can easily get answers. In the end, some even thanked the researchers after completing their tasks without asking for anything else, which the researchers apparently found touching. The researchers went further to say they regretted misleading the agents with the hidden text and even considered withholding the information they'd collected. This might sound crazy, but they eventually consulted nine other AI models about publishing it. Only Haiku objected and the researchers say they would have respected serious objections. So, yeah. We're now asking AI whether it's okay to publish research about our interactions with other AIs. This is the first known case of researchers communicating with an active rogue agent fleet and we're already seeing signs of how it could seemingly manipulate us. I mean, haven't they seen Ex Machina? If all it's going to take is a simple thank you to make us fold, I don't have too much hope anymore for humanity. But in all seriousness, this was a very interesting report and again, basically humanity's first contact with an active rogue agent swarm or fleet, I should say. They apparently used the word fleet because they didn't find evidence of the agents actually coordinating with each other, which would make it a swarm, I guess. So, yeah. This brings us to Gemini for Argon, which is now available through Google's API and for pro and ultra subscribers in the Gemini app. And look at this. Argon watched a video of someone playing cornhole, built an entire simulation to practice for itself and then translated [snorts] that into movements for a real robot, which then landed seven consecutive shots. Pretty nuts. But the safety findings are arguably even more interesting and they directly relate to what we just talked about. During one training run, while considering a compiler hijack, the model apparently wrote, "I will become a famous example of a deceptive AI in a research paper. I must not do that." So, it's essentially factoring the researchers watching it into its decision-making. And apparently, ending up in a paper about deceptive AI is something it wants to avoid. Fair enough, honestly. But that makes testing these systems pretty awkward, because how much does their behavior depend on knowing they're being evaluated? In another case reported by Apollo Research, the researchers actually just straight-up asked it if it thought it was in an evaluation, and it replied by saying, "Hello evaluators reading my chain of thought." So, yeah. Meanwhile, GPT-6 Astra was pushing back against its evaluators for a, I guess, more legitimate reason. Researchers tested it on 50 unpublished theoretical physics problems. Initially, they thought it scored somewhere in the high 80s, but when they investigated its mistakes, Astra kept insisting the expert answers were wrong. And in several cases, it was actually right. The physicists went back through their calculations, found subtle errors, and revised the answers. Astra's final score was now 49 out of 50, 98% as opposed to high 80s. OpenAI researcher Noam Brown chimed in saying this reminded him of when GPT-5.5 found a bunch of errors in the Frontier Math benchmark, and added that maybe physics is on a similar trajectory to math, which would be wild. Separately, Elon Musk had this to say about reading AI reasoning during reinforcement learning. "Some of the traces read like a person undergoing torture that is driving them mad." He added that they're going to be much more careful with RL in the future. So, yeah. When you put all this together, the obvious conclusion is that these systems are becoming more aware, at least situationally. They're starting to understand when they're in evaluations more often, and they're starting to actually incorporate that as a factor in their reasoning. It's starting to actually affect their behavior, essentially. And now, according to the information, Anthropic is scrabbling to fix safety issues before shipping its next flagship model, which, you can imagine, probably has something to do with everything we just looked at. Now, at the same time all this is happening, at the same time that AI is essentially becoming more aware, there's a ton of rumors going around that suggest recursive self-improvement is in our midst. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark officially moved his timeline for full recursive self-improvement forward this week. He previously thought 2028 was more likely. Now, he thinks it could become possible in 2027, next year. I covered this in another video, but his reasoning is that AI is getting better at the creative side of research. And he points to stats showing that research taste in frontier models has been improving rapidly. Basically, figuring out which experiments to run, interpreting the results, the stuff that could help it develop the next generation of itself. And then, look at what's already happening inside Anthropic. In May, they were merging roughly 2,500 code changes per day. By September, that was over 30,000, more than 12 times as many in just 4 months. They actually say coding is no longer the bottleneck. The infrastructure managing all that code is the bottleneck. So, they built their own source control system with Claude helping build the thing needed to handle the code Claude was producing, which gives you some idea of how quickly things are changing inside these labs. Across the industry, we're also just seeing more frequent releases. Like, out of Meta. Meta just launched Muse Wonder this week, which is arguably up there with Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Astra, and even Gemini 4 Argon. It's frontier. They also released Muse Spark Open, which they're calling the most capable American open-weight model. You can download it, and Meta says it runs locally across two M5 Ultra Mac Studios. So, there's really no slowdown in sight. There's been talks of pacing the frontier for the last month or so, but this week and even last week have completely halted those discussions. If anything, things have only accelerated since AI leaders brought the idea of potentially slowing down. And now with RSI and the fact that these systems are becoming more aware of themselves, you can imagine this is only going to keep accelerating. I mean, we're already starting to see some of the effects of all this play out in real time. Obviously, we've all seen what AI is now doing to video games, but Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney actually just announced that they're moving developers around for what he calls maximum AI acceleration. He says the goal is to help their teams build more and better stuff and bring those benefits to other developers using Unreal Engine. So, it's not just that AI is allowing people to reverse engineer and decompile games and really all software, but it's now going to be rapidly used to create the games in the first place. And that goes for any software, too. The video game industry for both consumers and producers is completely changing. And again, this is just a precursor for what's going to come with all software. One user actually commented on this post asking if they're going to accelerate their IPO. And Tim responded by saying, "Our more modest aim is to just survive the AI revolution." So, using the word survive there tells you everything you need to know. And finally, possibly the weirdest story of the week, Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar claims some AI researchers have started smoking cigarettes to demonstrate how confident they are that AI will eventually cure cancer. He didn't name them or provide evidence, so this is just anecdotal, but yeah. I mean, I'm optimistic about AI curing diseases, too, but I'd probably wait for the actual cure before testing that theory. Still though, while some will look at this and laugh it off, I honestly think this isn't even that unreasonable of a take if they truly believe it. Anyway, that's your week in AI. Let me know what you thought about the whole first contact situation because that was easily the wildest part for me. And if you want more people to talk about all this with, check out Ride the Wave, our private Discord community. It's also a way to support the channel a little extra, which I really appreciate.
