About OpenAI Dots
Dots are always-on agents inside ChatGPT that OpenAI launched on September 29, 2026. OpenAI lists several safeguards: each dot works on its own cloud computer, separate from the user's computer unless the user connects it; it can sign in to supported websites with saved passwords without exposing them to the model; and a monitoring system can pause or stop a dot's work if it detects a safety concern.
Dots start with built-in rules on when to act alone and when to ask for approval, and users can add Custom Rules to allow, require approval for, or block specific actions. Progress, including background work, appears in Activity View. Some sensitive tasks, such as changing a password, always stay with the user. OpenAI also notes that dots can still make mistakes, so consequential work should be reviewed.
